Summer wines from Le Verre Gourmand

kaleidoscopeWow – summer is well under way with scorching temperatures (and obligatory thunderstorms) all across the Alps. Now is the time to top up on some summery vino so here are a few wines that we heartily recommend plus some great reasons to try them…

Bel Star Prosecco – 5.88HT Light, fruity and fizzy. At 11% alcohol there is a good chance that you can spend apero hour getting stuck into this sparkling wine without wobbling off to bed before dinner time. Delicious and also available in pink.

White wine

St Felix Sauvignon Vermentino – 3.17HT This stuff has been the backbone of our summer sales since as long as we can remember. Zippy, zesty but oh-so tropical fruity too – it’s a perfect wine for quaffing in the sunshine…

Cave de Saumur Cuvee Eric Laurent – 4.29HT Chock-full of appely acidity, backed up by white fruit and a dash of honey, ‘Eric’ as we have come to know him is a barbecued pork chop’s best mate.

Chateau Bauduc Sauvignon Blanc – 4.95HT As stocked by Gordon Ramsay and Rick Stein, this is the second Sauvignon on our summer list but offers something completely new. Made in Bordeaux, the climate and winemaking here make for a grassy, lemony, lively, refreshing Bordeaux Blanc.

Marquis de Pennautier Chardonnay – SALE – 4.75HT Versatile, oaky chardonnay. Peach, pineapple and passion fruit flavours add a twist of summer to the creamy vanilla flavours that you’d expect of a southern French oaked chardonnay.

Tour St Honoré Provence Rosé – 5.50HT Provence rosé is summer in a glass. With a traditional base blend of Grenache and Cinsault grapes, the ‘TSH’ balances richness and complexity with a refreshing finish. Smoky, candied fruit on the nose, fresh and citrussy in the mouth. Just the thing at apero time or with grilled fish/barbecued vegetables.

Pure Mirabeau Rose – MAGNUM – 15.90 Also available in standard bottles, Pure Mirabeau is made by a Brit in Provence. Also famous for his ‘opening a bottle of wine with a shoe’ YouTube hit, Stephen Cronk cleverly adds a bit of Vermentino to this Syrah/Grenache blend to conjure up a fantastic pear-drop rose. Lovely stuff.

Gran Fabrica Gran Reserva 2006 – 3.48HT Sensational value for this – the big brother of our bestselling Gran Fabrica Crianza. Loads of spicy Spanish style here with plenty of fruit and body to make it a great partner for barbecued or grilled red meats.

Manoir Grignon Cabernet Syrah 2013 – 4.19 HT OK – strictly speaking this stuff is as French as garlic and surrender BUT it’s style is truly international. Made by Froggie genius, Alain Grignon, it tastes for all the world like a juicy, oaky Aussie wine. Truly versatile and dangerously drinkable…

Alamos Malbec – 5.63 HT Argentinian Malbec has firmly established itself as a great partner for a quality cut of beef. Dark and chocolatey – the dark fruit flavours combine with sweet spice and soft tannin to produce a wine that is both bold and smooth.

Quinta Las Mourcas Assobio – 5.78HT An utterly delicious blend from the Douro Valley in northern Portugal, the Assobio is a deeply flavoursome wine with abundant black cherry, red currant and raisin tones. A really engaging wine that scored 94 points from Wine Enthusiast.
