Quinta Nova Pomares Douro 2019

The Portuguese wine industry has quickly raised it’s profile from ‘one to watch’ to a country well established for it’s fantastic wines. We find this one from Nick Oakley simply irresistible.

What we say

Spicy and chocolatey with a hint of balsamic vinegar to top the fruity aromas. The palate is ripe, dense and sweet. Whilst this is not a delicate Douro, its supple charm shouldn’t be bludgeoned with very strong flavours. Try with braised ham hocks and butter beans, or the classic cabbage and smoked pork soup ‘caldo verde’.

What they say

A ruby red wine with blue notes – fresh and intense aroma (black and blueberries) with a hint of minerality. On the palate, there’s an intense fresh flavour with a great balance between fruit, alcohol. It has dense structure, beautiful concentration and a shiny texture, leading it to be sophisticated and complex. The finish is long, full and rich.

About the producer Quinta Nova

Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo is a place of extreme beauty in the heart of Douro valley and owned by Amorim family since 1999. The family connection to the wine comes from afar, through its connection with the export houses of Vila Nova de Gaia in the cork business. Meanwhile the dream came true and the project is now in the hands of the 4th generation of the family. Each of the vineyard’s 41 plots has its own individual character, showing the uniqueness of this single estate and the history of great wines, where tradition and technology go hand in hand.
